Elevator Pulley

An elevator pulley is a core mechanical component in elevator systems that enables the routing and driving of ropes. By transmitting the rotational movement generated by the motor to the ropes through its rope grooves and friction force, it ensures the safe and controlled up-and-down movement of the elevator car.

An elevator deflector-pulley sheave is an auxiliary pulley used to adjust the angle of the ropes coming from the drive motor, align the distance between the car and the counterweight, and direct the ropes in the correct orientation.

Elevator pulleys are generally manufactured from cast iron (grey/ductile iron), steel, or special engineering alloys to ensure high load capacity, wear resistance, and a long service life. Material selection is determined based on the load capacity and operational intensity of the elevator.

When selecting a pulley, the following technical parameters should be considered:

  • Rope diameter, quantity, and groove geometry
  • Pulley diameter and Pulley/Rope diameter ratio (D/d)
  • Carrying capacity, speed, and roping ratio of the elevator (1:1, 2:1, etc.)
  • Technical specifications of the motor and drive system
  • Frequency of use, environmental conditions, and friction coefficient

The ratio of pulley diameter to rope diameter (D/d) directly affects the bending stress of the rope. When correctly proportioned, tension and wear on the rope decrease, thereby extending the service life of both the rope and the pulley while maximizing system safety.

The geometry of the grooves on the pulley must strictly match the diameter and type of rope used. A correctly designed groove profile prevents rope slippage, wear caused by excessive friction, and deformation of the rope shape.

Since elevators are critical human-transportation systems, the dimensional precision, material quality, and load capacity of the pulleys must be tested in accordance with relevant standards. The use of certified pulleys guarantees the safe, quiet, and uninterrupted operation of the elevator.
